KOREAN WAR
TRIBUTE PAGE
I enlisted in the US Navy in September 1952 at the age of 17.
My first ship was the USS Bexar, APA 237 which was a troop carrier. We transported the marines and landed them at Inchon, Korea and then brought those who were rotating back to San Diego, California.
In January 1955, we were ordered to the Tachen Islands off of China's mainland. We evacuated everyone off the Islands before China took them back from the Nationals. My main duty was to man the landing boats. (A movie was made of this operation called "Away All Boats."
My next ship was a radar picket ship where I was in charge of the #4 engine room.
The next ship was the USS Yellowstone, AD27. I was 2nd in charge of A Division which did all reparis on all boat generators, fire pumps and air conditioning and refrigeration.
I was discharged in February 1960 and went to work for Gates Rubber Company for 32 1/2 years. I worked in the air conditioning and refrigeration department.
